“That’s what games are, in the end. Teachers. Fun is just another word for learning.” ― Raph Koster, A Theory of Fun for Game Design

There are so many moving parts, so many variables that it’s hard to know which levers to pull to get the desired result. This is the constant struggle in our modern world–our paradox of choice. We have so many options that we are paralyzed. The classic example of this is the toothpaste aisle in the grocery store. In the the olden days you picked between Crest, Aim and Colgate. Now you have those brands (plus seven more) along with these options: whitening, multiple flavors, tartar control, sensitive, gum repair, with baking soda, with mouthwash, professional, foaming, 2-step, strengthening, and dry mouth. In a well stocked toothpaste aisle you might have more than 100 options to choose from. On Target’s website there are 272 results for toothpaste. Where am I going with all of this? Don’t get distracted. Know what your goals are and focus on the task at hand. Maybe there’s a time and place for Propolis & Myrrh flavored toothpaste–but I doubt it.
